Today, Google announced the launch of the Google Maps API Version 2. So what does this mean, other than the fact that Google is solidifying its position as a serious maps provider? Well quite a lot actually! Apparently version 2 has smaller javascript code, more satellite zoom levels, a new overview map tool, documented custom map controls and types, less memory leaks, debugging tools and even a new GLatLng class so that you don’t have to flip the lattitude and longitudes to construct a geographic point. Thanks Google! If only the UK ordnance survey could be as innovative as you…
Sky by Broadband – error 1722
I just downloaded Sky’s new “Sky by Broadband” (that lets you watch movies and sports on your computer) but unfortunately for me the install program crashed half way through saying:
Error 1722: There is a problem with this windows install package. A program ran as part of the setup did not finish as expected.
Anyway, to cut a long story short I fixed it by going to http://www.kontiki.com/ and then clicking the “Get it” link just below the “View Webcast” bit. This installs kontikis delivery manager manually on your computer. After that you can re-run the Sky By Broadband setup file and it should work. NB: you must visit kontiki.com in Internet Explorer, as the delivery manager won’t install from firefox.
BBC investigates dodgy estate agents
If you were watching BBC one on tuesday night at 9pm you would have seen their Whistle Blower report. In this programme journalist Anna Adams and her colleague Emma Clarke go undercover to work for agencies of various sizes in the London area.
Their investigation uncovers a multitude of illegal and immoral practices by estate and letting agents ranging from placing false offers, hiding fees, faking signatures on documents “the chop chop trade”, flyboarding, undervaluing and overvaluing to sharing confidential information about clients.
You name it, it seems that some estate and letting agents are in to it! In one extreme case a mortgage broker even offers to forge passport documents and pay slips in order to get an unemployed person a huge mortgage.
Of course not all estate agents are like this, a lot of them will be honest, hardworking individuals, which is why it was nice to see on the same day a property professionals directory was launched by OurProperty.co.uk which aims to bring transparency to the property market. This site will allow estate agents to be open and honest about their fees and practices, and for users to submit feedback on their experiences with agents for others to see. Just what the market needs, in my opinion.
Internet kills the highstreet shop
It was inevitable really, but now it really is time to call it…. The highstreet is dead! For years, I have preached the benefits of shopping online to even the most adamant technophobes, so you may find it ironic that I am the first to miss our old friend the highstreet.
This weekend I was looking to buy some rollerblades, and seeing as they need to fit extremely well for comfort’s sake, I decided that rather than buy them online as I would with anything else, I would actually go to a shop to try some on. The problem? there are no shops left. Well none that sell rollerblades anyway. I went to two large towns near me (Basingstoke and Reading, the latter is actually a city), and after searching high and low, there was not one shop that sold rollerblades.
Actually, that’s a bit of a lie, John Lewis sold some budget skates, but seeing as I have been skating for 10 years, I wanted some good ones, and that’s when it dawned on me. As more and more people buy online, the sort of specialist retailers where I would have bought skates during in the 90s have been forced to either close, or move to cheaper industrial space rather than the highstreet prime retail space they used to occupy. It seems there has been a lot of consolidation and where we may have had 100 specialist skate shops across the UK before, now we have perhaps 10, and most of them probably rely on Internet sales for the bulk of their turnover.
Of course this does mean that we as the consumer get better prices, so I have ordered them online now. Lets just hope they fit.
Salomon Crossmax 3V FSK
I have just ordered myself some new Salomon 3V skates, so now I can keep fit skating around town! I’ve been looking for more information on them, but so far haven’t found any, so if anyone knows of any reviews please let me know (yes, technically I should have done my research before I ordered them, not after, but oh well).
The 39 dollar experiment
I love stumbling across fanciful gems like this one. I always wondered what would happen if you asked 100 random companies for free stuff, and now thanks to the efforts of Tom Locke, I know!
howto Google Page Creator
The latest offering from Google is a free tool to allow you to build a webpage using a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor that they have developed. The page is then hosted on Google’s servers. In total you can upload up to 100mb of stuff. Today, I put it through it’s paces by creating a small howto.
Does the Google Blogger Widget support HTML?
If this links to Google Mac Widgets then the answer is yes!
Google mac widget for blogging
Google have just launched a few widgets for the Mac OS X dashboard, so I thought I would try the blogging one. If you are reading this, I guess it worked!

Chickens in the Garden
Recently my mum has been talking of the benefits of having your own chickens at home, laying fresh eggs every day. So it looks like she is going to get an eglu and a couple of hens. I will let you know how the eggs taste.
